The 1900 Olympic Games in Paris were the second edition of the modern Olympics, but unlike Athens 1896, they unfolded in a far more diffuse and experimental setting. Held alongside the Exposition Universelle, the Games were spread over several months, with many events only loosely identified as Olympic at the time.
Paris 1900 expanded the scale and variety of the Olympic program, introducing new sports, broader international participation, and, for the first time, women competitors in selected events. At the same time, the lack of centralized organization made the edition less clearly defined than its predecessor.
Even so, Paris 1900 was a crucial stage in the early development of the Olympic movement. It showed that the Games could grow beyond a symbolic revival into a larger and more complex international sporting event, laying groundwork for the structure and ambition of future Olympiads.
