Basque pelota is a traditional ball sport originating in the Basque Country, with several disciplines that differ by court, ball, equipment, and number of players. Matches are generally played on a fronton: players send the ball against a front wall and the opposing side must return it within the rules of that discipline.
The sport can be played with the bare hand, rackets, wooden bats, or curved baskets. Its best-known and fastest discipline is cesta punta, also known internationally as jai alai. In cesta punta, players use a long, curved wicker basket called a cesta or chistera to catch the ball and hurl it back toward the front wall in one continuous movement.
Because the ball is played at high speed, cesta punta demands anticipation, coordination, precision, and teamwork. Basque pelota has deep cultural roots in the Basque regions of Spain and France, while its many variants preserve the same central challenge: returning the ball effectively so that the opposing side cannot make a valid reply.
