Croquet is a precision lawn game in which players use a mallet to strike balls through a prescribed sequence of hoops and, depending on the format, toward a finishing peg. It rewards accurate shot-making, tactical positioning, and control of turn order.
The sport has several forms, including one-ball and two-ball singles, doubles, and handicap competitions. Although scoring systems and playing conditions vary, the objective is to complete the required course more effectively than the opponents.
At Paris 1900, croquet appeared in four Olympic events: one-ball singles, two-ball singles, a handicap singles event, and doubles. It has not returned to the Olympic programme since.
