Freestyle

Freestyle is the swimming discipline in which competitors may use any stroke, although front crawl became the fastest and most commonly used technique in modern competition. Events are decided by finishing order and recorded time, rewarding speed, endurance, and efficiency in the water. In the early Olympic era, freestyle races were less technically standardized than in later periods, but they already represented the open-stroke racing branch of competitive swimming.
