Olympiad
Athens 1896
Swimming is the Olympic aquatic sport in which competitors race over set distances in the water, with final placings determined by finishing order and recorded times. The sport tests speed, endurance, and efficiency of movement, and across Olympic history it has evolved from open-water and improvised race conditions into a highly standardized pool-based competition. In the earliest Olympic Games, swimming events were still shaped by natural conditions, course design, and limited organizational standardization.
