Individual is the Olympic event format in which each fencer competes on his own rather than as part of a team. Final placings are determined by the results of direct bouts, pool standings, or later elimination structures, depending on the edition and competition system in use. In early Olympic fencing, individual events often used compact pools or round-robin formats before the sport evolved toward more standardized bracket-based systems.
