Standing Triple Jump

Discipline: Field

The standing triple jump was an early field event in which athletes attempted to cover the greatest distance from a stationary start. Although commonly called “hop, step and jump” at the time, its rules and techniques varied considerably.
At Paris 1900, the event was held as a final-only competition on 16 July at Croix Catelan, with ten athletes from four countries. Ray Ewry won with 10.58 metres, ahead of Irv Baxter and Bob Garrett. Contemporary research indicates that Ewry likely used three separate standing jumps rather than a continuous hop-step-jump sequence.
