Standing High Jump was first contested at the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900. Unlike the conventional high jump, athletes jumped from a stationary position, without a running approach. The event was held five times between 1900 and 1912, including the 1906 Intercalated Games, before being discontinued. At its Olympic debut, Ray Ewry of the United States won gold with 1.655 m, ahead of Irv Baxter and Lewis Sheldon.
