The 1500 metres is a middle-distance track event that combines endurance, pace control, and race tactics. Athletes must manage their effort carefully over the distance while retaining enough strength for the closing stages.
At the 1896 Olympic Games in Athens, the event was held as a single final without heats, a format common in several early Olympic competitions. The same final-only format was also used at Paris 1900, where the event was contested at Croix Catelan and won by Charles Bennett in a world-record time.
