Road Race is the Olympic road cycling event contested as a mass-start race on public roads. At the 1896 Games, the event was held over an 87 km out-and-back course from Athens to Marathon and back, finishing at the velodrome in Neou Falirou. Early Olympic editions varied greatly in route design and race organization, but the essential format remained unchanged: riders start together and the winner is determined by finishing order.
