The gymnastics events at Athens 1896 were staged inside the track at the Panathenaic Stadium. In the vault competition, each gymnast was given up to two minutes, during which he could attempt as many vaults as he wished. Judging in 1896 focused on two broad components: (1) bodily control and power, and (2) agility and mobility; the final mark was based on the overall assessment, but the original scores have not survived.
For Horse Vault (1896), only the podium places are reliably known. The remaining participants are mentioned in sources, but without exact positions. To calculate points consistently for everyone, we treat them as “participants with unknown placement” and display them under a shared position (4) for scoring purposes only.
